Delightfully Southern Tutorials: Working with Your Natural Hair Texture with Jason Keller // Delightfully Southern

When I first spoke with Jason Keller about collaborating with us on a few hair tutorials, he mentioned we should do one focusing on our natural hair textures and working with it. He is a huge fan of this, and he told me that this is a back-to-basics trend that is happening in all the big cities these days.

As someone who didn’t realize she had naturally curly hair until she was a senior in high school, I thought this would be fabulous, especially since I’ve struggled with my hair texture for the longest time while living in the South with the humidity.

So all you curly girls? Listen up! Jason’s broken it down for us. (Thank GOODNESS!)

You’ll only need four things to get your hair rockin’ your natural curls:

  • A hair dryer (preferably one with a low setting so the strength doesn’t mess up your hair)
  • Sculpting cream
  • Curl spray
  • Your fingers

It’s pretty simple what you’ll do.

First and foremost, scrunch the curl cream into your hair. Make sure it’s covering all your strands before proceeding.

Next up, flip your hair over, and turn the hair dryer on low. Use your fingers to continually scrunch your hair as you gently sculpt your curls with the heat.

Flip your hair back over, and work on the roots of your hair, scrunching and sculpting the curls to your liking while keeping the dryer on low.

When the roots of your hair are dry, scrunch the ends, and you’re good to go!

Pretty simple, huh? And let me be the first to tell y’all that Jason’s technique works like a charm!

Awesome!! As someone who has lived in south Louisiana all her life, I can ALWAYS use new tips on dealing with my curly hair!!

One question: when do you use the curl spray?

I feel ya, Britni! And I’ve used the curl spray in two places: Before I start drying my hair and after I’m done with the hair dryer and before I scrunch my hair again. I hope that helps!
